I was thinking the other day that I would like to get more books for Ella. Reading to your child is such a wonderful thing, and it is being quickly replaced with TV. We have gotten rid of our TV (do to my addictive personality) and reading has become a better alternative. So, that brings me to the purpose of this post. I would like all of you out there to tell me what your favourite childrens books are. Whether they were read to you as a child, or you are reading them to your children, or if you've just heard that they were good. I would like Ella to grow up knowing all the classics that somehow I missed out on. Do it for Ella, and hopefully any other child out there whose parent is reading this blog. So all you book lovers out there, please help me.

Wow, big question Kelly! I read all board books to Chloe since she eats everything. I have to say my all time favorites are Eric Carle books in English and Spanish. Every night we read "Guess how much I love you" (don't know the author off the top of my head). That's a great one. Other favorites are: "Runaway Bunny", "Five Little Monkeys", "Goodnight Moon", and "Are you my mother?". As for classics, my all time favorite is "The Pokey Little Puppy". Hope that's a good start for you! Happy reading!
Alicia
thanks, that helps a lot!
I also love Goodnight Moon and Runaway Bunny - we have the board book version (chewing on books is a universal trait of all babies!). But, above those, I have to HIGHLY recommend a book a friend of ours wrote called "This Is No Fairy Tale." Crossway published it a year or two ago and it's beautifully illustrated also. It's the gospel, wonderfully presented to children. The auther is Dale Tolmasoff; Chris and he were in The Bethlehem Institute (TBI) together. I bought a copy as a gift from our Christian bookstore, but got more copies of it off of Amazon for $5 cheaper (It retails for about $15 I think.)
One more set - The Chronicles of Narnia. This is probably a bit premature - but I read them to Luke anyways. He doesn't always sit still on my lap though. :) Having this set for Ella's library is a MUST! :)
oh kelly, look out.
I'll have jenecia be sure to get on this post, but I'll pitch in two cents. That book by Dale Tolmasoff that katie mentioned is very, very good. also, my sister in law got us into a children's writer named Holly Hobbie (presumably not her real name). the series is "toots and puddles." and thanks, ladies, for the suggestions. I suppose we're all in this together.
David,
I am so excited. I've been wanting so badly to hear from Neesha!
Thanks for the help, but I'll be honest, I didn't expect you to recommend a series called "toots and puddles".

Josh, Kelly, and little Ella, a hearty hello from a fellow pioneer...I love throwing that whole pioneer thing around. Unfortunately, after graduation I thought I'd seen the last of you guys. Being such an excitable guy you could imagine my delight when I stumbled upon your where-abouts. I owe it all to Dan Gritts (aka David). It cracks me up looking at you guys...not your faces or anything just the good ol' times. Beautiful baby...I still can't believe I'm her god-father! My kid hasn't even arrived yet, and I still have an opinion! (course, I do about most things!) I love "The Little Red Hen." Narrating it for my K-5 graduation probably has something to do with it. I also remember LOVING the "Alice in Bibleland" series of Bible stories. Alice Joyce Davidson is the author of those. Now you have some serious book shopping to do!

God's Wisdom for Little Girls: Virtues and Fun from Proberbs 31
(I posted this on Alicia's blog and thought I'd add it here for you too, Kelly!!)
I LOVE THIS BOOK!
I bought it before I knew we were pregnant. It is a BEAUTIFUL book and it is beautifully done. You should check it out ( i attached a link above, but I don't know if it will come through on the comment. Also, there is one for little boys as well.
It has been a great buy and I don't even have kiddies yet! Ella will love the illustrations. It is definitely a book that helps you "train up your child".
You guys don't know me all that well but when I see a question about reading and kids' books, I always have to say something about the Happy Ending Books by Jane Carruth. They were my favorites as a young child...
Jenny (Forbes) Muth
I forgot to mention that, like many forgotten favorites, the Happy Ending books are, sadly, out of print. I've been able to find quite a few online, though.
Jenny Forbes?! I mean Muth! How are you? Where are you? :) What's up?
Thank you so much for all your help!
Tobie, I do remember that you love "Love You Forever" and I read it to her often. It was good to hear from you.
Lynn,
We have 2 Sandra Boynton books and I want to get more. They are great.
And I'll have to start looking for "Everyone Poops"!!
